A 23-year-old man died after his car rolled into the South Platte River on Wednesday morning in north Denver.
The crashed vehicle was spotted and reported about 6:45 a.m. on the 6300 block of York Street north of downtown, officials say. Emergency responders found the man had freed himself from the vehicle. His body was found downstream.
He was declared dead at 9:30 a.m. at the hospital, said Trooper Josh Lewis, of the State Patrol.
The man, who was identified as Cristian Urbina of Aurora, was driving a 2001 Nissan SUV. No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash.
Officials say they don’t know when the vehicle rolled into the river.
A dive team was dispatched to the rescue scene, which is southwest of Interstate 270 near the Cherokee Generating Station.
No more information about the motorist was immediately available, the State Patrol said.
