James Morrison stabbed his 23-year-old brother at least 11 times in the torso in a Denver house early Thursday, before walking out of the bedroom where his brother lay dying and then confessing to the crime, court records show.

Morrison, 28, is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder. The stabbing happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of Elm Street, where several members of Morrison’s family were present, according to a probable-cause statement.

Denver Health paramedics found the victim, identified Friday as Jesse James Morrison, lying unresponsive on a bed and wrapped in “numerous blankets,” records say. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital about 30 minutes after emergency responders found him.

Police say James Morrison’s sister and father told investigators that he was responsible for the stabbing. Blood was on a hand and arm of Morrison when an officer arrested him.

Once in custody, Morrison declined to speak to investigators, records say.

Tracey Lee, a neighbor who lives across the street from where the stabbing happened, says roughly a dozen people live in the home.

“I didn’t know someone got stabbed, but it doesn’t surprise me,” she said, adding that officers are at the house about once a month.

Investigators on Thursday morning were moving in and out of the home, processing the scene.
