About 160 troops from Colorado Springs’ Fort Carson deployed late last week to west Africa in support of the military’s response to the Ebola crisis, the base said on Monday.

The engineers from the 615th Engineer Company, 52nd Engineer Battalion, will help construct facilities and bolster efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

The base said the troops will not be treating patients.

“The engineers will be part of a total Army effort that includes units from the active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard,” the base said in a news release. “The soldiers will be deployed for 9 months to one year.”

Officials say the troops have received specific medical training and equipment to protect them from exposure to Ebola.
