Aurora police announced Tuesday night that a suspect has been arrested in the shooting of an officer during a traffic stop on Friday.

The department said on its Twitter feed at about 8:30 p.m. that a news conference would be held Wednesday morning. Police said no further details would be released before then.

They said they are not seeking and additional suspects.

Earlier Tuesday, the department identified the wounded officer as Ryan Burns, an 11-year veteran of the force. It also offered a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the shooting.

Burns was shot about 9 p.m. Friday, after he and another officer pulled a car over on the 1700 block of Fulton Street.

Both Burns and the other officer were in uniform in a marked patrol car.

At the time, the officers did not know that the driver had just stolen the “puffer” car a few blocks away.

A puffer car is one that a motorist starts, usually in cold weather, and leaves running unattended. A target for thieves, such cars are stolen easily.

As the officers were walking to the suspect’s car to make contact with the driver, the suspect fired several shots from the driver’s side window, striking Burns.

The second officer returned fire, shooting multiple times as the suspect sped north on Fulton.

Burns remains hospitalized and is recovering from his wounds. Police say and is improving every day.

The reward money was raised through efforts by the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office, federal law enforcement agencies, Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and Aurora businesses.
