Some Overland High School students got an unexpected lesson in geography Tuesday when their bus driver failed to make a scheduled stop in Aurora and instead drove to Englewood.

“It was a bit unusual,” said Cherry Creek Schools spokeswoman Tustin Amole.

She said officials believe the driver was affected by an undetermined medical issue.

Amole said it’s unclear how many students were on the bus, although she added that somewhere between 80 and 90 kids are eligible to be on board. She said all but nine got off when the driver made its regular stop at its first location.

That’s when things got interesting. The driver drove past the second of the two stops and instead continued towards Englewood. An aide on the bus called dispatch to apprise them of the situation; dispatch then made a 911 call and notified police, however the aide convinced the driver to pull over.

“We don’t know why he deviated from the route, but there was no out-of-control driving at all,” Amole said.

The driver was eventually transported to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. His condition, and the specific medical issue, are still unknown.

Amole said another driver was sent to the location and took the remaining students home.
