Former Denver Post editor Bill Hornby died last week at 91. (Denver Post file)

Re: “Former Denver Post Editor William Hornby passes away at age 91,” Nov. 19 obituary.

So sorry to read of the death of Bill Hornby, a former editor of mine.

Jan and I drove into Denver from our home in Sterling on a cold morning in December 1967. I boldly walked into the Denver Post building at 15th and California streets, met with managing editor Hornby and told him I’d like to work for The Post. Hornby, who seemed to like the looks of my work, said, “We have no openings right now. I would suggest you walk across Colfax to the Rocky Mountain News, see my friend Vince Dwyer, tell him I sent you, and ask if he can use you.” I did, Dwyer (the News’ managing editor) hired me, and nine months later Hornby contacted me to say The Post now had an opening. I crossed Colfax again and began my long Post career.

Two fine newspapermen, Hornby and Dwyer, friends and competitors.
