Interview with Lisa Walter, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I had some success with selling cookies at public events, like craft shows, so I decided that I needed a certified kitchen to meet the sudden demand. I was looking to rent one but I found a location in Eastlake, which is my old stomping ground. So I pulled the “for rent” sign and opened up the bakery part time. I just kept adding more to my offerings like rolls and pies and then it became a full-blown bakery.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We really focus on fresh ingredients and the old-fashioned hospitality. The atmosphere is very laid back and it has a very old town feeling because it’s actually in a house. It’s in a neighborhood home. I think the biggest thing that sets me apart is that I make everything on site. Every customer that walks through my door makes a comment on the smell of fresh baked pastries. And when it’s gone, it’s gone. I’ve sold out many times.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: My customers and the people I’ve met along the way. I love being able to chat with them and connect with them. I love to see their faces when they walk in. My place just isn’t something that they see every day.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: I’m a picky baker, so it’s really hard to train people to bake the way that I do. I have high standards for my products. But it’s also finding someone who’s hospitable enough to treat my customers the way that I do. That personal level is important.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Quite a few people do not realize that I have moved, and they don’t realize that it’s in a house now. I moved right in front of the future Eastlake stop for FasTracks, so that’s really exciting and a little nerve racking.
