BOULDER — The lawyer representing a Boulder immigration attorney facing charges that she stole from numerous clients urged a judge Wednesday not to allow prosecutors to drop more than 30 counts previously filed against the defendant.
Emily Cohen was arrested in February after seven families alleged she had agreed to represent them in various immigration cases, collected more than $41,000 in combined fees then dropped out of contact. After her arrest, numerous other Cohen clients came forward, prosecutors say. The Boulder County district attorney eventually brought 54 charges against Cohen but now wants to drop most.
Cohen’s attorney, Steven Louth, insisted either his client be tried on all 54 charges or that all the charges prosecutors are seeking to drop be dismissed with prejudice. Louth said the prosecution’s attempt to zero in on specific, hand-picked charges, while dropping others “smacks of unfairness” and is “evidence of bad faith.”
