Sunday morning fog caused about 46 flights scheduled to land at Denver International Airport to be diverted, airport officials said.
In her 5 p.m. update, Laura Coale, a DIA spokeswoman, said dropping temperatures were causing airlines to de-ice planes, adding time to takeoffs at the airport.
Most of the diverted flights were sent to Colorado Springs Airport.
Shifting winds forced the airport to close some runways, adding to the delays, Coale said.
“The average delays are about two hours,” Coale said. “It’s going to take some time to catch up.”
The conclusion of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend — Sunday and Monday — are anticipated to be two of the busiest days of the year at DIA.
Coale said more than 166,000 passengers were expected to move through the airport on Sunday — about 26,000 more people than normal. On Monday, another 157,000 passengers are expected.
