WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Friday announced his selection of a Defense secretary by nominating Ashton Carter, an Ivy League academic and national security insider.
If confirmed by the Senate, Carter, 60, will replace Chuck Hagel.
“I accepted the president’s offer to be nominated for secretary of Defense because I respected his leadership,” said Carter, 60, at a ceremony Friday at the White House.
