A brown trout in Browns Canyon of the Arkansas River. (Scott Willoughby, The Denver Post)

Re: “Make Browns Canyon a national monument,” Nov. 30 editorial.

Thank you for your stand in support of protecting a true Colorado treasure, Browns Canyon. As you stated, this proposal has been discussed and vetted for 20 years or more, and today there’s widespread local and state support for the monument designation, which would merely protect existing uses, including fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, rafting and horseback riding. This is about protecting whatap unique about Colorado and supporting our growing recreation and tourism economy. Whatap not to like?

Letap get this done; itap good for Colorado.

Taking action where Congress has failed for almost a quarter of a century, President Obama is standing up to partisan politics, gridlock and dark money to consider giving national monument status to Brown’s Canyon.

Thirteen bills have been entered and failed to pass an impotent Congress in order to protect this important natural and economic wonder. This part of the upper Arkansas valley contributes not only an escape for fishermen, hikers, and rafters, it is a key component to the economic well being of the cities of Salida and Buena Vista.

These communities have petitioned their government repeatedly in order to prevent outside interests from exploiting Brown’s Canyon for the benefit of nameless shareholders and their Wall Street holding companies.

Browns Canyon has provided me and my family endless days and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. It would be a shame if everyone could not do the same in the future.
