Getting your player ready...

The jarring shift remains eye opening. Over a three-week period, the Broncos have changed their personality, if not philosophy. They have run more than they have passed, providing a steady dose of C.J. Anderson, while using Peyton Manning as a complementary piece.

It has raised external concern that the ground attack has knocked Manning out of rhythm.

“There’s no quarterback I’d rather have than Peyton Manning. It just so happens that we have leaned a little more on run,” coach John Fox said. “Our passing game is fine. You never know, we might put our foot on the gas and throw it 50 times.”

The Broncos own three straight victories with a road game at San Diego looming. With a win, the Broncos clinch their fourth straight AFC West title, while tying the San Francisco 49ers’ record of 12 consecutive divisional road victories.

For the Broncos to tweak their offense, they need improved health. Tight end Julius Thomas talked optimistically about playing against the Chargers. The Broncos activated him against the Bills, but he never put his helmet on. His left ankle continues to improve. The Broncos have missed him in the red zone, where he owns an NFL-best nine touchdowns. Thomas’ absence coincided with Virgil Green’s return from a calf injury, making it easier to emphasize the run, according to Fox.

“There’s nothing wrong with our passing game. We have just run more the past few weeks. There was nothing wrong with our run game when people were blowing fuse about that,” Fox said. “We lost a guy like Julius Thomas, and part of coaching is utilizing what we have to the best of our ability.”

Fox declined to speculate on Thomas’ status other than saying “time heals.”

Weakside linebacker Danny Trevathan is eligible to return this week from a left knee injury. His status remains uncertain, though he has been practicing. The Broncos have played well the past two games, but if nothing else, easing Trevathan back in would provide depth.
