A Fort Collins man was seriously injured Tuesday when he was struck by a car — after he was knocked from his bicycle by a woman opening her car door.
Fort Collins police said Hans Updegraff, 37, was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies after the incident, which occurred about 3 p.m.
Officials said Updegraff was traveling west on Lake Street in the bicycle lane. As he passed a parked car in the parking lane, the driver opened the door. The bicycle collided with the car door and fell into the westbound travel lane. A 2009 Subaru Outback headed west on Lake Street ran over him.
Lake Street was closed between Shields and Whitcomb streets for about 3 hours. Police do not believe alcohol, speed or distraction contributed to the collision.
Police said charges are pending against the driver of the parked car, Emma Holt, 19.
