Authorities in Boulder say a 22-year-old skier from the University of Colorado was found dead at Eldora Ski Resort on Monday night after he apparently fell and struck a tree earlier in the day.

The Boulder County sheriff’s office responded to the ski area about 9 p.m. after receiving a missing persons report on a Boulder man who had been skiing at the resort and did not returned.

The man’s car was found in the parking lot and deputies alerted resort staff who searched the ski slopes and found the man’s body off the Jolly Jug, an intermediate run near the base.

Friends told the man was Rob Miles, a University of Colorado senior from Coral Springs, Fla., who was double-majoring in environmental engineering and music.

“Rest in paradise Rob Miles!” Ronnie Palacio said in a tweet. “You’ve always been great.”

Friends called authorities when Miles failed to show up at music rehearsals and Theta Tau fraternity meetings.

“The victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said.

The county coroner’s office is working to determine a cause and manner of death and will officially release the man’s name once an investigation has been completed.

The last death at Eldora happened in 2008.
