Interview with Stephanie Huff, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: For the last several years, I have fostered dogs with a local rescue. While I loved it, it was difficult to see the neglect and suffering inflicted upon the dogs, especially when they were adopted young and returned, injured, much later. I was initially looking into locations for a shelter, but this perfect location was discovered for a doggy daycare — a facility in which dogs who were cared for and loved would be brought in. I still hope to assist the rescues, but this facility needs to become established first.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: When I worked elsewhere, I always worked hours which did not enable me to use doggy daycares myself. In opening this facility, it was important for me to be open for longer hours to allow more workers the chance to use daycare.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: There’s nothing better than being able to bring your dog to work and then play and snuggle with additional puppies all day. Dogs make everything better. I also appreciate the opportunity to help alleviate the stress some dogs cause their owners due to energy, destruction or being away too long for dogs to be comfortable. I can send dogs home and know they are going to have a better night.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: I am having trouble being discovered. Many people are unaware there is a new doggy daycare in this area of town and my marketing thus far has done little to attract clients. When people find me they often ask if I’ve advertised (which I have done a great deal of).
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: First, I’m central to many commuters — on Wadsworth Boulevard, two blocks north of Hampden/U.S. 285. Second, it has been my goal to create a doggy daycare that looks very similar to a children’s daycare. I have bright colors in areas along with a children’s playset. I hope to continue adding a young vibe with small kid beds and other play items in time.
