A Lakewood affordable housing nonprofit has been awarded one of four $10,000 grants from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority.

The Residences at Eaton Senior Communities, 333 S. Eaton St., competed with almost 100 applicants statewide for the housing authority’s inaugural David W. Herlinger Direct Effect Awards.

“The $10,000 award from CHFA will enable Eaton Senior Communities to purchase a wish list of equipment that will expand and enhance the services provided through our wellness program,” said David Smart, president and CEO of the Residences at Eaton Senior Communities said in a news release. “We are honored, humbled and overjoyed to be recognized by CHFA with the Direct Effect Award.”

The senior living community based in Lakewood since 1980 provides affordable housing and support services to low- and moderate-income seniors. The community, which has two facilities totaling 227 units, provides services that include individual health and wellness assessments, and a wellness program that brings additional services and education onsite.

The award was created to honor the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority’s 40th anniversary this year and to recognize Colorado nonprofits working to provide affordable homeownership and rental housing and investment in local businesses.

“It was very difficult to select only four winners from a pool of nearly 100 strong applications. CHFA has been proud to partner with these committed organizations over the years. Each one has made an important direct effect in the communities we serve together,” Cris White, CHFA executive director and CEO, said in the release. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with each of them in the years ahead.”

Other winners selected by a panel of judges from CHFA staff and board members are La Plata Homes Fund, Rocky Mountain Community Land Trust, and the San Luis Valley Development Resources Group. All four will be recognized at a celebration at the Denver Art Museum on Dec. 10.
