Getting your player ready...

You might know Annie Sloan as the woman who launched a million paintbrushes with her the best thing to happen to furniture upcyclers since the belt sander.

Now, with (Cico Books, 2014), she tackles broader issues of décor.

If you think you might have a décor style, but have no idea what to call it, you’ll find help here. Are you Neoclassical? Modern Retro? Coastal? Warehouse? Traditional Swedish? Just flip through and see which photos attract you most.

My pick was the warmly retro London apartment. Now, how to create that in a 1980s oil-boom tract house? Sloan’s book doesn’t speak to that, but I know that the hundreds of images of smartly upcycled furnishings will fire my imagination — the wooden school chair with a map laminated on its back and seat, the square dresser with drawers that grade from blue to orange.

Sloan includes “paint your own” instructions with each chapter, and after reading them, I’ll be keeping a few weathered pickets from my old privacy fence to play with.
