Re: “Evergreen rescue adds fees for help for out-of-towners,” Dec. 11 news story.

The Evergreen Fire Protection District plans to charge non-residents $500 if they get in a car accident and receive assistance from the fire department.

I will now make an effort to avoid stopping and shopping in Evergreen when I head to the mountains. How dare Evergreen Fire Chief Mike Weege think he can charge non-residents to use his services? Does he not consider that outsiders spend money in his town and contribute to the tax base? Does he not consider that Evergreen residents will get into accidents in other jurisdictions where they will not be charged?

I encourage Gov. John Hickenlooper and the legislature to put a stop to this. We can’t have a state where districts turn emergency services into a profit center.
