Heavy metal

Finally, tubas are getting some respect, thanks to somelow-register brass instruments that’ll spread holiday cheer on Dec. 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Denver’s Skyline Park at 16th and Arapahoe streets. It’s all part of TubaChristmas 2014, a nationwide series of free concerts performed by local and volunteer musicians playing 300 tubas, euphoniums and other brass instruments, with only a few hours of rehearsal time. Afterward, jump on the free 16th Street Mall shuttle and explore downtown’s festive shops and restaurants; or check the website for other Tuba Christmas locations in Colorado.

Making the holiday go ’round

Downtown Denver is spinning with excitement with its new carousel at the Denver Pavilions, open through Dec. 21. Rides are $3 each, but there are two ways to get a free one. Shop at any of the 40 Denver Pavilions businesses and receive a ride voucher with purchase. Or, in the holiday spirit, bring a can of nonperishable food for donation to Food Bank of the Rockies to the carousel and hop on for free. The carousel is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Postage, paid

Sometimes, it pays to wait. Last-minute holiday shoppers should mark their calendar for Free Shipping Day on Dec. 18. This is a one-day cyber event, when merchants offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve. Even more joyous, there is no minimum purchase requirement. More than 1,000 online retailers are expected to participate.

Festival of lights

Hanukkah will be celebrated at the McNichols Civic Center Building (144 W. Colfax Ave. in Denver) with a Festival of Lights from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18. The evening’s activities include a performance by the Colorado Hebrew Chorale, special guests from “Stories on Stage,” a traditional candle lighting, seasonal food, songs and dancing. Admission is free and open to all. Organizers would appreciate an RSVP online, so they can bring enough chocolate gelt.
