COLORADO SPRINGS — El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa submitted his retirement papers Thursday and plans to leave office Dec. 31, the sheriff’s office confirmed.
His retirement comes two weeks before the end of his third term.
He did not give a reason for cutting his term short, said Sgt. Greg White, a sheriff’s spokesman. Maketa told White he did not want to speak to reporters about his decision.
Maketa’s retirement comes after 27 years with the sheriff’s office, 12 of those in office as its leader.
