The former second-in-command of the Denver Sheriff Department has accepted a plea agreement in a Jefferson County theft case.
Michael Than, 47, accepted the plea agreement in Jefferson County District Court on Nov. 6 and is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 6.
Than pleaded guilty to one felony count of filing a false tax return and one misdemeanor count of attempted theft of less than $500. Prosecutors have dropped six other felony theft and tax fraud charges.
In April, a with eight counts for a string of thefts that allegedly began in 2010 and continued through 2013.
Than allegedly was captured on a Target store’s surveillance cameras stealing tax software, according to . He was accused of hiding boxes containing the software inside bags of dog food he purchased.
He then allegedly sold the software.
Than was the division chief in charge of the Downtown Division until December 2013, when he was placed on leave and immediately resigned.
Than’s duties included overseeing the Downtown Denver Detention Center, court services, the civil process unit and the Correctional Care Medical Facility.
