Police in Colorado Springs on Thursday said they have arrested an active-duty Fort Carson soldier on suspicion of strangling a female escort until she became unconscious late last month.
Nilark Jamall Bates, 22, is being held at the El Paso County jail in lieu of a total of $250,000 bail in the alleged attack.
On Nov. 28, police were called by a hotel employee, who told them a woman renting a room there had just been assaulted.
The 21-year-old victim had posted an escort advertisement and agreed to a “quick meet” with Bates for cash, police say. “Further investigation revealed that during the ‘meet,’ (Bates) became agitated and strangled the victim until she lost consciousness,” according to police.
“Based on identifying information provided by the victim and follow-up investigation, a felony arrest warrant was issued and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.”
Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department’s human trafficking unit helped investigate the allegations.
Bates is accused of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, felony menacing, menacing and soliciting prostitution.
