After enduring two days of withering criticism over its decision to yank “The Interview” in the face of threats, Sony Pictures on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to the First Amendment and said “it is still our hope that anyone who wants to see this movie will get the opportunity to do so.”

Excellent. It’s one thing for theater chains to balk at showing the movie, given real liability concerns, but the movie should still be released digitally. Otherwise, a foreign dictatorship will have bullied Hollywood into submission.

President Obama’s critical comments Friday seemed to have been the final straw for Sony, whose CEO insisted to CNN that “we have not caved.” OK, but it sure looked like they had for awhile.
