Just less than three weeks after , Evergreen Lake is frozen over and open for skating.

“The opening is about a week later than usual because of a spell of unseasonably warm weather earlier this month,” said a news release from Evergreen Park and Recreation District, which manages the Denver-owned lake at 29612 Upper Bear Creek Road in Evergreen.

had officials worried whether the ice would be thick enough for ice skating during winter break and in time for the annual New Year’s Eve Skate the Lake celebration. A recent drop in temperatures has brought the ice up to standard at one foot thick.

offers the world’s largest Zamboni-groomed outdoor ice rink with 8.5 acres of ice including a large public skating rink and 12 hockey rinks.

The fortuitous freeze will also allow for the fifth annual Pond Hockey Championship on Jan 3-4. The public tournament has grown each year and features a 35-and-older open, a “Rink Rat” open and women’s divisions.

The lake will also host a youth pond hockey tournament Dec. 31 as well as a New Year’s Day polar plunge.
