Gov. John Hickenlooper on Tuesday appointed former University of Colorado Regent Jim Martin to be Boulder County’s next public trustee.

Public trustees handle public transactions and foreclosures on real estate properties. They oversee the administration of deeds of trust, releasing them when loans have been satisfied and foreclosing in the event of default.

Martin, a Boulder Democrat who was a regent from 1993 to 2005 and is now a private real estate consultant, said the position is “probably the right challenge at the right time.”

Martin will fill the post being vacated by Paul Weissmann, who’s resigning from the public trustee’s job after having been elected in November to be Boulder County treasurer. He’ll take his oath of office on Jan. 2.
