University of Denver defenseman Will Butcher was named an alternate captain for the U.S. National Junior Team, the Pioneers announced Tuesday.

The team will play in the IIHF World Junior Championships, which takes place from Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Canada.

Butcher, 19, was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche with the 123rd overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In two seasons with the Pioneers, he has recorded 10 goals and 14 assists in 53 games.

Forward Jack Eichel (Boston University) was named team captain, and forward John Hayden (Yale) was named the other alternate captain.
