BUCKHORN CANYON — Since last September, Anne Weeks has had to drive an extra two hours per day to her classes at Front Range Community College because the 2013 floods cut a section of County Road 27 to the bedrock.
“I was going through a set of tires every five months,” said Weeks, plus hundreds of extra dollars per month in gasoline costs as well as wear and tear on her vehicle.
She was ecstatic Wednesday morning when Larimer County commissioners officially reopened the road after a $15.4 million reconstruction project that involved blasting through bedrock and moving the road farther away from the Buckhorn Creek.
“This is a really fantastic $15 million Christmas present,” Weeks said at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Christmas Eve. “It’s probably the most expensive Christmas present I’ve ever gotten.”
