Firefighters were expected to be on the scene overnight Tuesday dealing with blaze at a Denver warehouse.

“We’re continuing to battle hot spots inside the building, which is still unstable,” a spokesman for the Denver Fire Department said shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. “That makes it hard to get everywhere we need to be.”

One fireman suffered what the spokesman called a “lower extremity injury” and was transported to a local hospital.

The blaze started about 1:45 p.m. at 3860 Revere St., near the intersection of interstates 70 and 225. A carpet recycling company, among others, is housed at that location. Smoke could be seen for miles as fire crews from Denver and Aurora battled the fire.

About 80 firefighters were summoned to fight the blaze, officials said. The Denver Fire Department called two alarms while the Aurora Fire Department called another.

Lt. Mike Pylar, a spokesman for Denver fire, said a great deal of smoke and flames were showing when crews first arrived, calling the blaze among the most significant the department has battled this year.

“There’s a lot of damage to this building,” Pylar said from the scene.

Investigators will work to determine what sparked the fire.

In part because of the frigid conditions, the department spokesman said three to four companies would be rotating at the site throughout the evening. In addition, personnel from the Regional Transportation District, Xcel Energy, and the Department of Public Works, among others, would also be providing support at the scene.
