Wow, what a brutally cold morning: -6 degrees, with a windchill of -18. I don’t know about you, but that’s when I start worrying about body parts falling off and shattering on the ground during the walk in to work.

Fortunately, breakfast gives you a chance to fortify yourself against the frigid air. I’m a big fan of , a family-run place at the northwest corner of Krameria Street and 14th Avenue.

The has a long list of staples, but they also play around with blackboard specials, too — sometimes as a test drive for inclusion on the regular menu. I recently noshed on a menu newbie, a chorizo hash that was just the ticket on a cold morning. Spicy pork chorizo was mixed with shredded potatoes and melded into a hefty square. There was cheesy goodness, a topping of two eggs over easy, and a scallion garnish.

Best of all, it was done Christmas style. Pools of house green and red chile sauces formed a nifty yin-yang in the bowl. Paired with a couple of small but toothsome flour tortillas, it was a great way to start the day and made for a fine new member of our .
