BOULDER — On New Year’s Day in 2013, a beloved elk was shot in the Mapleton Hill neighborhood. One year later, plans for a bench to memorialize the fallen animal were put into motion.

But now, two years after the elk’s killing, the corner of Ninth Street and Mapleton Avenue remains devoid of any sign of “Big Boy.”

Rita Anderson, who was with the Boulder chapter of In Defense of Animals when it started the fund to pay for a memorial, said plans with a local artist to install a bench failed. Now she’s hoping a committee or someone from the Mapleton community will help get something put into place.

“I need someone or preferably a group of people who would work with me, preferably who knew the elk,” Anderson said.
