Even with swearing new members into Congress this week, a national government that betters our everyday lives may be no closer to becoming a reality. If anything, legislation far removed from helping the middle-class, low-income and vulnerable citizens is more likely.

As Republicans take control of the U.S. Senate and have more members in the House, they are promising to pass bills that they know our president is already against: the Keystone XL pipeline, gutting Obamacare, and making further cuts in education and social programs. It appears doubtful they will accomplish anything meaningful on immigration.

Opposing the White House, giving more favors to Big Oil, stripping health care from millions of Americans, and ruling by exclusion are hardly hopeful ways to begin the New Year and new Congress.
