With the winter break over, high school sports leapt back into action. Denver East’s Brian Carey didn’t miss a beat from the downtime and has continued his tear into the new year for the Angels, who are ranked No. 10 in The Associated Press Class 5A Colorado media poll.
Since the start of 2015, the 5-foot-8 senior guard has scored 90 points in two games, leading East to a 63-59 win over No. 2 ThunderRidge (46 points) and a 82-78, double-overtime loss to No. 5 Chaparral (44 points).
Carey is averaging a state-best 37.3 points and 3.5 steals. The defending 5A state champion Angels are 5-6.
Playing big. Mullen’s Emily Dryden was a big presence in the post for the Mustangs. In three games, the 6-3 senior averaged 13.0 points, 14.7 rebounds and 6.7 blocks to help the Mustangs to a 2-1 record. She recorded a triple-double in a 78-12 win against Overland on Wednesday.
Love drops 42. Kent Denver junior Maya Love scored 42 points to lead the 3A Sun Devils to a 76-72 victory over 4A Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday. Love has scored 30-plus points three times this season, including a 30-point, 32-rebound game in December.
Mr. Windex. Aurora West College Prep forward Cesar Carmona had a monster game Tuesday, scoring 39 points and grabbing 23 rebounds in a 76-54 win over Venture Prep. Carmona, who leads the state in rebounding at 15.6 a game, pulled down 20 two days later.
Dishing it out. Denver South senior Devante Loggins recorded 11 assists in a 70-50 win over Pueblo East on Friday. In nine games, Loggins has eight with double-digit assists.
