Woody Allen

Prolific filmmaker Woody Allen will turn his talents to the small screen, creating, writing and producing a series for Amazon. The streaming service, which won its first Golden Globe award this week for “Transparent,” is seeking high-profile exclusive content as it competes for status in the crowded entertainment marketplace.

For Oscar-winner Allen, the move represents a departure after more than 40 films over half a century.

Netflix may have “House of Cards” and Kevin Spacey but Amazon has the guy behind Hannah and her Sisters, Annie Hall, Manhattan and Blue Jasmine.

Of course it’s not Allen’s first time in TV, in fact he’s come full circle with the digital times, returning to the arena where he began as a writer on the Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show and others.

From the Amazon announcement:

Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” said Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios. “From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”

Woody Allen added, “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”
