GREELEY — About 175 people attended a demonstration Monday in front of the Weld County Courthouse Centennial Building demanding accountability, transparency and compassion for families in the wake of four fatal officer-involved shootings in about the last eight months.

The venue was chosen to send a message to the Weld District Attorney’s Office, which is housed in the Centennial Building. The office is conducting an investigation into the Jan. 4 death of Michael Rodriguez, who was shot and killed in front of Paradise Billiards, 818 31st St. in Evans, by Evans and La Salle police.

It also was no accident that the demonstration took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, said organizer Sylvia Martinez.

“He (King) talked about peace and participating in peaceful demonstrations to effect change,” Martinez said. “We wanted to come here as a community and let the DA know that there are concerns about how things are done.”
