The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone and email scam in which someone calls and tells people that warrants are being issued for their arrest for failing to pay a photo radar ticket.
The caller then tells the victim that they have to make a payment to cancel the warrant. The caller instructs them to buy a Green Dot MoneyPak Voucher, which can be purchased at a number of businesses, in the amount of the fine for the speeding ticket. The caller then instructs the victim to call them back to give them the account information.
The department says no law enforcement agency in Weld County uses photo radar and its officers do not contact residents by phone, email, or mail to obtain funds for a traffic fine. If individuals are contacted by someone claiming to be law enforcement they should ask for their name, badge number and agency. Then advise the caller you will be contacting the agency directly.
