An arrest affidavit says heroin was found in Leyba’s cell on Dec. 24, about 10 days after he was arrested in the slayings. A sheriff’s deputy searched Leyba’s cell after he was “acting strangely.”
The deputy said he found a small bag with a “tar-like substance” that tested positive for heroin, weighing about a half-gram, according to records. When the deputy asked Leyba if he wanted to talk about the drugs in his cell, Leyba said he couldn’t because his clothes were covered in urine.
Leyba has been charged with first-degree possession of contraband and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
A deputy found a sharpened spoon and a tote box that appeared to have been fashioned into a hook in Flores’ cell on Jan. 3, records show. Corrections deputies searched his cell after he threatened to commit suicide and began punching his cell door, the records say.

Leyba and Flores had each been arrested roughly two dozen times before they were charged in the triple homicide. Both are due in court to face charges in the slayings on Feb. 17.
