AIR FORCE ACADEMY — James Knowlton was introduced as the athletic director at the Air Force Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Already, he said he has been impressed by the compassion coaches, students and faculty feel toward the institution.

Knowlton was introduced by academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson, who said Knowlton was selected after a thorough, national search to become Air Force’s 11th athletic director. Knowlton follows Hans Mueh, who is retiring Friday.

Knowlton said he officially will be on the job March 23 after completing arrangements to move west from Troy, N.Y., where he has been athletic director at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute the past seven years. He previously was on the administration staff at the United States Military Academy at West Point He graduated from Army in 1982.

He said he was excited to join the Air Force team and listed three initial objectives.

“I want to get to know the people here,” Knowlton said

He also listed a review of the athletic facilities and the academy’s revenue streams for athletics as some of his initial priorities.
