Getting your player ready...

Don’t expect South Suburban Park and Recreation District executive director David Lorenz to see a park named after him when he retires. He already has that.

But Lorenz will leave behind quite the legacy as he steps down March 31 after 30 years on the job and 48 years with the district.

“South Suburban is what it is today because of Dave’s leadership,” South Suburban board chairman John Ostermiller said in a statement. “The residents of the district owe him a great debt of gratitude. He will truly be missed.”

Lorenz, 71, said he has no definitive plans for his retirement. He said the decision to step down was difficult because he still enjoys the job, but the timing was right.

“It’s a good time for me in my life to retire. I think the district — and any organization — benefits from a new direction, new voice, new leadership, especially after all these years.”

South Suburban serves more than 135,000 residents in parts of Jefferson, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, including Littleton, Lone Tree, Englewood, Sheridan, Centennial, Bow Mar and Columbine Valley.

Under Lorenz’s leadership, the district developed the Goodson, Sheridan, Lone Tree and Buck recreation centers as well as the Holly Swim and Tennis Center, Cook Creek Swimming Pool, the Littleton Golf and Tennis Center and the Lone tree Tennis Centers.

He saw the district through seven successful mill levy or bond issue campaigns, , and was part of the formation of the state lottery program with proceeds going toward parks and recreation. He was also appointed by Gov. Roy Romer to serve on the task force that created the Great Outdoors Colorado Program.

But while he said he appreciates all the accomplishments equally, he gets the most joy out of watching people enjoy the South Suburban facilities.

“My focus and my enjoyment is the package that we put together for the citizens,” Lorenz said. “It’s not one thing.”
