Anna Simon and Fran Simon, right, joined about 100 people to celebrate a U.S. Circuit Court ruling that agreed that it is illegal to deny same-sex couples in Utah the right to get married during a rally in Civic Center in Denver on June 25, 2014. (Karl Gehring, Denver Post)
Re: “Sports columnist Benjamin Hochman’s defense of gays,” Jan. 9 letter to the editor.
Letter-writer Matthew Hayes writes, “I will continue to hold no disrespect for gay people, as does most of society…I would like to go five minutes in 2015 without hearing that someone’s homosexuality is reason for me to be in awe.”
Most of society? Give me a break! When gay people enjoy universal equal rights in all 50 states – such as legal benefits from marriage, inheritance rights, Social Security death benefits, medical and end-of-life decision-making, workplace protections against being fired for simply being homosexual, same-sex insurance coverage, etc. – then and only then will we truly have a tolerant and respectful society.
Someone’s sexuality is no reason to be in awe, but their braveness in coming out and living as an openly gay person in a country still full of bias and anti-gay laws is.
