Re: “Is it open season on Republicans in academia?,” Jan. 18 Mike Rosen column.

Mike Rosen asks whether Charles Angeletti, a history professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, directs critical thinking against political parties other than the GOP. As a former student of Angeletti, I can answer in the affirmative. He also requests that students engage in dialogue with him any time they feel uncomfortable or have a complaint or a question. He has students write in a journal that he reviews weekly, and he addresses any issues students have. He addressed mine, and I was not as kind as Rosen in my original assessment of Professor Angeletti.

The duty of a university professor is to challenge your assumptions and make you question and examine things from other perspectives. It is not their job to hold the hands of those who dislike having their beliefs questioned. What I find remarkable about Rosen’s opinion is that he expressed exactly what Angeletti was referring to: an intolerance of ideas.
