COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The national president of the NAACP is visiting the Colorado Springs area this weekend to promote unity in response to a recent explosion outside a building housing the local NAACP office.
The Gazette reports Cornell Williams Brooks’ visit will start with a reception at the Mining Exchange Wyndham Grand Hotel on Friday night. He’ll attend a luncheon and state conference at Colorado College on Saturday. On Sunday, Brooks will deliver the sermon during the 11 a.m. service at New Jerusalem Baptist Missionary Church in Fountain.
The Jan. 6 blast caused only minor damage and no injuries but rattled nerves due to its proximity to offices of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. The FBI is investigating.
