Construction of a tolling station will prompt westbound traffic on U.S. 36 between Federal and Sheridan boulevards to be realigned for several months, starting Sunday.

The tolling station is part of the project, which includes the construction of an express lane in each direction on U.S. 36 along with two free general purpose lanes.

The express lanes will accommodate high-occupancy vehicles — including traditional buses — along with tolled vehicles and specially built and designated buses known as bus rapid transit.

The first phase of the retooled U.S. 36, from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street in Louisville/Superior, opens this year. The second phase, from 88th Street to Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, will open in 2016.

The station is an electronic structure that will be used for signs and tolling.

Motorists will be diverted onto new concrete pavement with single-lane closures beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Beginning at 9 p.m., motorists can expect double-lane restrictions with one lane remaining open for all westbound traffic.

Once the lane realignment is complete, motorists entering westbound U.S. 36 from southbound Federal can expect that the right auxiliary, or ramp-to-ramp, lane will be split from the rest of the traffic when entering the on-ramp, CDOT says.

The split right auxiliary lane will function as a through lane for about 1 mile, then traffic will come back together just before the Sheridan off-ramp.

CDOT did not have a date for when the realignment will end.
