Denver Police officers stand outside East High School on Sept. 6, 2013. Neighbors are concerned about — and police are monitoring — a spike in public fights among students near the school, which are attracting enthusiastic crowds. (RJ Sangosti, Denver Post file)
Re: “Fights near Denver East draw the attention of police, city officials,” Jan. 24 news story.
Thanks for your recent article on the kids fighting in the areas around East High School. One of those fights broke out in the alley behind my house and I called the police immediately because I thought someone could be seriously hurt. They came right away, thankfully, and the kids dispersed.
We need to recognize that the teenage years are really tough. Fighting at this age is not a new problem. It’s a very real mental health problem that can be helped with understanding and counseling. Teachers, counselors and administrators can and do help, but it only takes the memory of Columbine and other school shootings to tell us that more needs to be done if our young people are going to get through these years alive and ready to face the challenges awaiting them after graduation.
