After trying for weeks to hire Vance Joseph from the Cincinnati Bengals, the Broncos decided to hire former Broncos coach Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.
“My choice from the very beginning,” Denver Post columnist Woody Paige said in an extra session of The Sports Show on Wednesday. “I felt like with a team that was trying with this window to have a chance at another Super Bowl victory. You bring in a better defensive coordinator, it’s a class reunion.”
Paige noted that Phillips took the Houston Texans’ defense from 30th in the league overall to second in his first year.
“Say what you will about him as a head coach,” Shapiro said. “As a defensive coordinator, we know he’s good. HE’s done it at a number of places and done it very very well. This should quiet some of the people who did not want the Broncos to play such a vanilla defense as they did under Jack Del Rio.”
