Evans police arrested a man Friday following an incident in which he allegedly fired shots at a woman then fired at officers.

Police said Hugo L. Garza, 30, was booked on two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and a single count of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Police responded to the 3500 block of Pueblo Street on a report of a man arguing with a woman. While officers were responding, dispatch advised that the man was shooting at the woman, who was running away. Weld County Communications then reported he was sitting in a vehicle in the street.

As police arrived, the man reportedly fired his weapon, this time in the direction of officers. The officers told him to drop the gun, put his hands up and exit the vehicle.

The man threw a semi-automatic handgun out of the window but said he was unable to exit the vehicle because he was injured or stuck.

He was taken into custody by SWAT officers.
