Veteran Denver banker Steve Shaffer died Friday morning after battling leukemia for 10 months.
Shaffer, 60, was market manager in Colorado for Chase and its predecessors starting in 1996. He oversaw an expansion last decade that took Chase to 120 locations from 40 and added 1,000 jobs to the area.
Shaffer was a founder of Avon National Bank in Vail back in 1984 and left Colorado to work in California and Texas before returning to head retail operations for Bank One in Colorado in 1996.
Shaffer was the longest-tenured market manager within Chase and passed on promotions that would have taken him out of Colorado, spokeswoman Mary Jane Rogers said.
Shaffer lived with his wife, Dru, in the Indian Hills area. He was known for driving a dusty blue Jeep Cherokee with more than 200,000 miles on it and for his passion as a rock guitarist, performing with an employee band at local and national events hosted by the bank.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
