St. Vincent Hospital in Leadville will close its doors after the city failed to pass a mill levy in November. (Andy Cross, Denver Post file)
Re: “Don’t snub relief for rural Colorado,” Jan. 26 editorial.
I strongly support state Sen. Kerry Donovan’s bill offering modest financial support to rural communities that are adversely impacted by economic losses.
Living in Leadville, I have seen the devastating effects that happen when a large employer, such as the Climax mine, decides itap not economically feasible to continue operations. At the present time, our hospital, St. Vincent, is struggling to reinvent itself into a smaller operation. In the process, many good jobs have been and continue to be lost.
Donovan’s small bill (cost: $2 million) could help alleviate some of the terrible pain that is caused to individuals and our communities when such events happen in Colorado.
