Denver International Airport this month will begin building a new, four-story garage near the southeast corner of Jeppesen Terminal that will expand the number of parking spots by 1,795.
The project is needed, an airport spokesman wrote in a news release, to meet the demands of an increasing number of air travelers.
In 2013, there were 101 days in which either the east or west garage at DIA was full. In 2014, a garage was full on 120 days, airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said.
The $46 million garage will take two years to complete. The money is budgeted through the airport’s capital improvement project fund. Swinerton Builders is the contractor.
The project begins just as the airport is completing the addition of 261 parking spaces adjacent to the north end of the east parking garage and a redesign of the surface east and west economy lots that added 430 spaces.
When the garage is complete, DIA will manage a total of 43,275 parking spaces.
