A Denver man indicted on child pornography charges was denied bail Tuesday after it was determined he was danger to the community and a flight risk.

Shawn Cheever, 44, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on Jan. 27 and arrested by the FBI soon after. According to the indictment, Cheever received child pornography via his computer on Oct. 28, 2014. Another count alleges that on Jan. 6, Cheever knowingly possessed a computer disk or other material that contained child pornography.

During Tuesday’s hearing, U.S. attorneys said Cheever was a registered sex offender because of a prior conviction in a child pornography case. They added he had 23 prior convictions (11 of them felonies), all of which made him a flight risk and a danger to the community.

Receipt of child pornography carries a sentence of not more than 20 years imprisonment, but if there is a similar conviction, the defendant faces not less than 15 years, and up to 40 years in federal prison, as well as up to a $250,000 fine.
