WATCH:
A man fatally shot himself with a rifle during an early-morning stand off with police Tuesday morning in Highlands Ranch, authorities say.
The name of the man has not been released pending notification of family members.
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of Riddlewood Lane and Riddlewood Court in Foothills Park at 5 a.m. and a report of a shooting, said Sgt. Ron Hanavan, sheriff’s office spokesman.
Deputies tried several times to convince the man to put his rifle down so that they could help him.
The man then fatally shot himself, Hanavan said. Deputies did not fire any gunshots and only the suicide victim was struck by a bullet, he said.
The shooting is under investigation.
